Black Friday Popularity Ranked Per Country 2025
Black Friday marks the start of the holiday shopping season in the United States and is mostly celebrated with big discounts from retailers.
The term “Black Friday” began in Philadelphia during the 1950s and 1960s. Police used it to describe the chaos caused by heavy traffic and crowds of shoppers and tourists, drawn to the city for the annual Army-Navy football game.
Black Friday isn’t just in the United States anymore. Many countries followed. We wanted to find out where people are ‘celebrating’ Black Friday, so we collected the data.
Surprise! Finland ranks number 1.
How we collected & analyzed this data
Let me share with you how we went about this study on global interest in Black Friday. We wanted to find out which countries are most engaged with this shopping event, but simply looking at total search volumes wouldn’t give us the full picture—larger countries naturally have more searches due to their bigger populations.
So, we turned to AHREFS to gather data on the monthly search volumes for “Black Friday” in different countries. But instead of stopping there, we took it a step further by considering each country’s population. This allowed us to calculate the percentage of people in each country who are searching for Black Friday. By doing this, we could make a fair comparison between countries of all sizes and see where Black Friday truly has the biggest impact.
For example, even if a small country had fewer total searches than a larger one, a higher percentage of its population might be interested in Black Friday, which tells us something important about its cultural significance there.
It’s also worth mentioning that we had to leave out some countries. China, for instance, wasn’t included because Google isn’t being used. We also excluded some countries with very small populations because the data wasn’t sufficient to draw meaningful conclusions.
In the end, this approach helped us identify which countries are most enthusiastic about Black Friday based on how many people are actually searching for it relative to their population. We hope this gives you a clearer understanding of global Black Friday trends!
Conclusion
While larger populations, such as in the U.S. and Brazil, naturally tend to have more searches, some smaller populations like Finland show higher per-capita interest. This may reflect a stronger consumer culture around sales events, where people are more active in hunting for deals, even if the overall number of searches is lower due to the smaller population size.
So yes, Black Friday originates from the United States, but it seems like other countries are taking over.
