Sustainable Procurement with ChatGPT

With the help of ChatGPT and other AI models, procurement teams can leverage the benefits of automation and faster processes. However, the rise of artificial intelligence has sparked many controversial discussions about ethics and system bias, leading to resistance to its adoption.

While this is a significant challenge, and it is smart to be skeptical, ChatGPT can be a resourceful tool in procurement by making processes more efficient and ensuring supply chains are sustainable and transparent.

Deloitte held a survey that found that out of 350 senior procurement leaders from over 40 countries, 72% managed to enhance their ESG efforts while maintaining operational efficiency.

The Impact of AI-Powered Sustainability in Procurement

In recent years, more corporations have shifted their focus toward sustainability and social responsibility to help them reduce their environmental impact without compromising the efficiency of their functions.

At Procurement Tactics, we surveyed our email subscribers to ask about their sustainable procurement practices. Out of over 500 respondents, 56.4% affirmed that their organizations have established formal policies on sustainable procurement. This significant majority highlights a strong commitment to sustainable practices within more than half of the surveyed respondents.

The number of companies pursuing more ethical and sustainable procurement processes has grown significantly over the last few decades. With multiple uses across different industries, artificial intelligence shows many capabilities in procurement and sustainability initiatives.

Furthermore, investors and consumers are always looking at environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors when choosing which enterprises to do business with, and which ones to avoid. This is why more businesses are placing ESG initiatives at the forefront of their core functions.

5 Trends for ChatGPT-Powered Sustainable Procurement In 2025

It’s no secret that AI has emerged as a valuable tool in assisting and even automating activities. But how can ChatGPT, a conversational AI model, assist businesses in achieving consistent sustainability in their procurement processes?

Uncover the top five trends we expect will transform how we navigate the world of AI, modern procurement, and other advancements.

1. Digital Transformation and Technology Integration

ChatGPT’s role as an assistant to sustainable procurement will grow exponentially. Beyond decision-making and negotiations, organizations are set to leverage ChatGPT for digital transformation, including cutting-edge procurement and AI technologies to assist procurement processes.

This shift involves the application of AI to analyze large datasets, ensure visibility and accountability, streamline and speed up processes, and more. Overall, we can expect to see more use cases of AI in advancing sustainability objectives—to assist human decisions, not replace them!

2. Circular Economy and Product Lifecycle Considerations

The circular economy has grown increasingly crucial over time, and ChatGPT is set to play a vital part in embedding principles that promote circularity into procurement methods.

We can expect to see organizations using ChatGPT to analyze the lifecycles of products and raw materials, minimize waste outputs, and promote greener initiatives like less single-use plastic and more carbon-neutral operations.

3. Environmentally Conscious and Ethical Sourcing

ChatGPT will become even more instrumental in promoting ethical and sustainable sourcing practices. We expect organizations will harness AI to look at supplier practices, verify sustainability standards, and make environmentally conscious decisions.

ChatGPT can generate and process large volumes of information, and this can allow businesses to feel empowered in upholding supply chain visibility, maintaining partnerships with like-minded suppliers, and promoting ethical and environmentally friendly initiatives in procurement.

4. Supplier Diversity and Inclusion

2025 is set for an increased emphasis on supplier diversity and inclusion as an indispensable part of sustainable and ethical procurement strategies. With the spotlight on racial injustice and unethical labor practices in global supply chains, companies are compelled to change their ways.

With multiple minority-owned businesses and vegan sourcing practices reshaping the future of procurement, organizations are likely to actively select diverse suppliers to promote equality, inclusion, and social awareness.

Beyond ethical considerations that are bound to laws and policies, more companies will choose better strategies that align with ESG values and create better opportunities for people from all backgrounds.

5. Transparency and Stakeholder Engagement

Visibility, accountability, and consistency are all key to promoting transparency among stakeholders. Transparency is non-negotiable when it comes to sustainability efforts in procurement, and ChatGPT can be equipped to help make this happen.

2025 is the year we will see an increased use of AI for this purpose, where organizations harness ChatGPT to enforce transparency and visibility in the procurement process. The AI chatbot can provide stakeholders with real-time insights and regular sustainability reports.

This empowers organizations to build healthy communication and engagement which will encourage businesses to work together towards a future of circularity, sharing sustainability objectives with suppliers, procurement team leaders, stakeholders, and consumers.

My Experience in Sustainable Procurement Practices

For this article, I will share my experience in sustainable procurement practices.

“Throughout my career, I’ve discovered that it’s critical to prioritize sustainability not only because it is morally right to consider ethics and environmental factors in our purchasing decisions, but because it also strengthens the company’s bottom line. With the emergence of AI and the rise in sustainability standards, we can effectively navigate shifting market expectations, create strong relationships with suppliers, and demonstrate our forward-thinkingness.

In one of my previous roles as a procurement professional, I was responsible for buying 1500 different products divided over 70 to 80 suppliers. We had a target to reduce our product packaging by 25% across the thousands of products I was buying. What I did there was ask my suppliers to join me for a 30-minute meeting where I asked them to prepare a presentation or rather, an action plan.

With that action plan, our suppliers then presented it to me on how they could reduce their packaging by 25% in the following years. In that way, while it was my target, my suppliers helped me achieve it. I let them do the thinking and share the ideas they had, and that in turn helped me achieve my target.”

Conclusion

The intersection of sustainability, advanced technology, and procurement is shaping a more environmentally conscious and socially responsible business world. ChatGPT and other AI models will likely be equipped for sustainable procurement and bring about a greener future.

The year 2025 will emphasize that ChatGPT will not replace human decision-making and creativity but advance and amplify it. Companies must take away from previous years and take action, not only to advance business and improve human collaboration but also to conserve and restore the planet.

The role of ChatGPT in procurement grows even more prevalent as businesses continue to navigate shifting market conditions and consumer preferences. With advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning, companies can better position themselves as responsible environmental stewards and forward-thinking individuals prepared to adapt to a changing world.
